
Upside Down: Struggling with Bipolar Disorder
3.30 is a VR interactive experience with a duration of about 10 minutes. The project is intended to raise people’s awareness of artists who suffer from mental diseases. The title 3.30 refers to the World Bipolar Disorder Day, on which the story ends.

According to researches, 25% of the people in the creativity industry carry genes that can potentially lead to mental illnesses.

'3.30'
'3.30' is a VR experience with a duration of about 10 minutes. It was created by using the Unity Engine and can fit in the Vive device.
The player will trigger the storyline to develop via VR interaction, and will go through incidents such as talking to “Mr. Xu”, losing oneself in the dark, searching for the pill bottle, etc.

The story is about Gao Fei, an artist who suffer from bipolar disorder. Out of financial stress, he once took an order. The pressure from work became in conflict with his will to create his own works, which led to an episode of the illness. Tortured by the disease, Gao hallucinated, crashed into his own sculpture, and ended up collapsing in the blood with his works.

The project is intended to raise people’s awareness of artists who suffer from mental diseases. The title 3.30 refers to the date 30th March, the World Bipolar Disorder Day, on which the story ends.
Job Division
I am the leader of a three person team, and responsible for Technical Art, including lighting, shading, art directing and procedural creation.
In terms of art, I designed the scene space and layout the scene. I gave each scene a different color scheme and decoration style to reflect their symbolic meaning. In terms of technology, I wrote shaders with Shader Graph for interaction and animation, created procedural materials in Substance Designer, and also optimized LOD and batching. In addition, I provide the prop designer and the programmer with working pipeline suitable for unity HDRP.
Programmer Luo is responsible for the code part including level triggering, interaction and playtesting. Prop designer Yang is responsible for the creation of all props and objects in the scene.
For our team, the script and plot design comes from everyone's efforts。
After optimization, the game can run 50f per second on a high end PC.




Awarded:Chinese Student VR&AR Contest
We completed the work in October 2019. In Shanghai,December 2019, '3.30' won the Best Game Award of the Chinese Student VR&AR Contest, which is the highest award for Students Virtual Reality award in China.
