2022 Maggie Chang Entry

My first attempt on entertainment industry is the second year of college. When I first saw the doctor strange movie, I fell in love with it. At that moment, I know that I want to work as a modeler and texture artist in the future. I love bringing stories towards my work and to bring a touch of qualities into my work.

Maggie Chang: Starting


Craft Desk

The scene is a craft desk of making Japanese dolls called, Karakuri Ningyo. It is a original concept that I made to replicated the process of how the doll is made. For example, the crafting of the wood head, then the painting disks; last, the sewing tools and fabrics on the side. The environment of the craft desk is mainly based on different research of images and documentary videos. 

Most of the props are modeled in Maya. Some organic stuff like the heads are modeled in Zbrush. The clothing was done in Marvelous Designer. The textures are created in Substance Painter and Photoshop.

Bone Princess

This is my first Zbrush character with my original concept of a Shaman warrior Princess. Her clothes are inspired by Shaman and native American which surrounds with leathers, sew cloth and bone accessories and props on her wearing.

After modeled the character in A pose, I adjust the model to lower subdivision and export it out to Mixamo to rig for pose. Then I bring the model to Maya and Zbrush to model the cloths more so that the cloths matches the pose.

To make her showing the bone elements, I made a cane for her with a giant goat skull. Her overall look of her necklace, earings and the belt are all full of different kinds of bones and skulls. By adding the elements it makes her fit more like a shaman.

Mercedes Benz SSK Cabriolet

This is a car model of the Mercedes Benz SSK Cabriolet. It is my first car model in Maya and textured in Substance Painter. 

Sci-Fi Room

The scene is a Sci-Fi interior scene I modeled and textured in Maya based on a concept by Ilmari Kumpunen. It is challenging to match the concept. There are concerns about how the spacing works and how the light bounce surrounding the reflective metal panels.

The interior scene is created in low poly.

Japanese Vending Machine

This is a scene inspired by my travels in Japan. I was walking in the Shinjuku Kabukicho area at night, there are many back alleys behind the bars in the night life area. I noticed the vending machines shining in the darkness, and the sound of the dusty air conditioner. When I was in Ikebukuro, I was drawn to the special vending machines with anime character stickers display. I added that into my scene so that it highlights the Japanese design elements. 

The scene is a procedure modeling in Houdini. It is textured in Substance Painter, Photoshop and composite in Nuke.

This is the first time participating a contest in the rookies. I just start my journey as a Gnomon student, and I'm excited to learn, explore more technical and creative stuff here.
