Boris The Binny, and wonderful projects.

A collection of Concept Art projects I created, most of them centered around Boris the Binny, my own little creature creation. Boris is a creature that likes to eat plastic and poops out recycled items, saving the world, one snack at a time.

Boris the Binny

My favourite creature design so far is one I hold close to my heart. Boris the Binny, a creature that can consume plastic and 'poop' out recycled items. He uses his chameleon-like tongue to snatch litter from all kinds of places, cleaning up polluted areas with gusto. In his own adorably dorky way, Boris reminds us that even the smallest and most unexpected heroes can make a significant difference.

I created Boris with the hope that one day he will be the star of his own children's book, teaching kids how to take care of the earth, and showing them how to recycle. In this day and age,  we need something that is happy, positive, and a tad weird to show us the way into a brighter future.

Keep Boris in mind while you scroll through my work- he is my inspiration!

Lottie the Otter

Lottie is inspired by Jane Goodall. I wanted her to be a light elderly figure with a love for exploration and nature. My idea was that Lottie would be a grandmother- like figure for Boris, as she teaches him all about the environment. Originally she was going to be a bear- but the interesting otter shape lend itself to something a bit different and 'new'.

Environment 1 - Home of Lottie and Boris

Once we had made our character designs, we used Blender to create our external and internal environments. I decided to keep the theme, and create a home where Boris and Lottie could live in, together. I tried to keep the same kind of childrens book, cosy, chalky style, as well as keeping the colour palate in line with the characters.

Using the 3D programme as a base was challenging but fun. It definitely made things like perspective and form a lot easier, and made me a lot more comfortable in creating structures such as this.

Environment 2 - Interior Design

Boris' Room

This cute little room is made specifically for Boris himself. Boris helped build the room with things he found and made (don't ask him how...), like the bin he sleeps in, and the toys that are scattered across the floor.
Aside from being Boris' bedroom, living room, and bathroom, this room also functions as a recycling station. Bring your plastic bottles and other trash, and Boris will gladly take them off of your hands!

Once your plastic bottles and other trash have fallen down the slide into his eating chest (his most prized possession), he will then consume the items, creating wonderful and useful items in return.

For this project we used Blender to lay the base for the drawing and design, as we drew the room from different angles. It was really fun making it come alive, and incorporating my previous character design of Boris to tie it all together.

Campaign Design- The Binny Brigade

As I became more comfortable drawing Boris and his world - for my final campaign design project, I decided to take it one step further and create a story around Boris and Lottie. My idea was that Lottie wishes for a second chance at life- a final adventure. Her wish gets granted, and across her path comes Boris, a small creature that doesn't know how the world works.

As Boris is seeing the world for the first time, Lottie takes care of him and teaches him about the wonders of nature. They soon discover that Boris loves to eat plastic, and thus together they help the world they live in (Luminora) to get rid of the plastic and restore the natural balance of the world.

As I hope to create this into a children's book, my idea was that Lottie could help children appreciate nature, as by teaching Boris about the natural world, she also teaches the children and parents who read the book.

As you can see, I had a lot of fun thinking about what Boris' family would look like, each of them loosly modeled after some kind of bin. They all had to look kind of similar, but also very different, so I kept elements like the horns/spikes, and the different coloured limbs.

And finally, some environment designs for The Binny Brigade. I hope that one day, I will create a children's book from this and make it come alive, inspiring children all over the world to take care of the earth. It is not too late.

The first one is a mock up- as we see Lottie wishing upon a star for a second chance at life, the start of an adventure that will lead her to Boris, and ultimately saving Luminora from the plastic.

The second one is an underwater scene, how I imagined the vibrancy of the ocean to look like in this world.

Other Designs

Other designs I did for my Concept Art studies, not related to Boris and the created world around him. As you've probably gathered, I like to draw cute things with some kind of environmental message.

The End!

Thank you so much for going through all of my work! This was all done through the Academy of Digital Arts.

I really enjoyed every single piece that I designed, and I hope that joy shines through. May Boris inspire us all to take better care of the planet, and who knows, maybe you'll see him in bookstores in the not too far future :)
