The Bee Machine

For this project, I decided to create a van for a family of beekeepers that spend most of their free time saving the bees, camping, and just BEEing together. Get it? BEEing? Haha

Update - 16 Jan 2021

It's been a while since my last upload, but after getting some amazing feedback from Christina, I spent some time really trying to make the adjustments she suggested. I also spent a good amount of time cleaning up some areas and finally making my license plate.

I enjoyed working on this project a lot, and I'm hoping this is just the beginning of my journey as a 3D Texture Artist/Look Dev Artist.

Thank you all for the feedback and encouragement on my first contest here!

(L) A ceiling with glow in the dark stars, for the cold nights that make camping outside a little uncomfortable.

(R) A side view, featuring a kiss and handprints left on the back window!

Update - 9 Dec 2020

Hi everyone!

It's been a few days since my last update, but I'm back at it!

For this round, I wanted to show more wear and tear on the Kombi. I wanted it to look like the people that own this van actually get down and dirty trying to save the bees and the planet. These are the people that sometimes spend the night camping next to their van with the kid(s). And on nights when it's too cold outside, they sleep in the van and stare at the stars they've painted on the ceiling. They love bumper stickers, and the funny messages their kids draw on the windows.

As you can see, I'm having a ton of fun with this, haha.

For the next update, I plan to show a little more dirt and grime. I also plan to finally upload my license plate...and maybe add another bumper sticker or two!

My "BEE mad." bumper sticker (designed in photoshop and applied in Substance Painter as an alpha).

Update - 2 Dec 2020

In this go, I added some more details and grunginess to give the van even more character. I also FINALLY started messing around with the headlights and I changed the top texture. While I enjoyed the brush texture I had before, I found that doing this honeycomb pattern would help simplify things a bit, while also marrying the top and bottom textures.

For the next update, I'm hoping to add some more mud, but I also plan to work on some bumper stickers. I'm also playing around with the backgrounds a bit more so see what has the best vibe.

I'm really enjoying this contest. It's absolutely keeping me motivated ^_^

Update - 1 Dec 2020

Added some more character and textures! As I work on this, it feels more and more like a van for surfers who also want to save the bees. Absolutely something I can get behind.

In my final render, I plan to show more of the interior. The interior will have those glow in the dark stars many of us are used to. I also plan to clean up some of the lines/borders a bit more. Getting them to be completly straight is a task, but worth it.

I'm really looking forward to playing with this some more!

Update - 30 Nov 2020

So I've been having some trouble keeping that roof texture in my renders. Any ideas?

Blocking in the textures :D
