1$ HUGS

I imagine a sparsely populated future where social connections are very weak and you're gonna have to pay to get some affection. And that's when Eddie comes in: it's a machine that allows you to pay to receive a hug. It's a "1$ HUGS" robot.

Update - 23 Sep 2020

This week I worked on Eddie's mouth (inspired by vintage speakers) and ears.

I also started adding details to the other parts of the robot and created the metal material for the arms.

Update - 16 Sep 2020

Eddie's chest is one of the focal points of my concept so i spent a lot of time refining it.

I started creating all the alphas I needed on Illustrator.

Then I applied them on Painter adding materials and details.

Update - 10 Sep 2020

Today I worked on Eddie's eyes.

I wanted them to have the shape of old headlights from vintage cars so I started looking for references.

Once I got the idea of how I wanted them to be, I started working on the height and normal maps to fake some reflections.

Next step was adding light to the headlights and to the surfaces right next to them. I'll keep refining that in the next updates.

See you next time!

Update - 8 Sep 2020

I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to texturing and I want this to be an opportunity for me to learn about it and get familiar with Substance Painter.

So the first step for me was to watch some video-tutorials and learn the basics of Painter.

I found Substance Academy to be very helpful: throughout its introduction course I learned about baking, ID maps and so on and I started applying that knowledge to the Eddie model.

Once I learned the basis, it was time to get some inspiration and come up with a concept.

The Eddie model makes me think of a dystopian kind of future with a punk vibe. I imagine a future not very populated, where social connections are very weak and you're gonna have to pay to get some affection.

And that's when Eddie comes in: it's a robot-machine that allows you to pay to receive a hug (the "free hugs" concept with a twist). It's a "1$  HUGS" robot.

My main references for this project are: vintage slot machines, streamline objects and a lot of artworks, from other great creators, that I think summarize the vibe I want to picture.

I started creating my base material to check if my color palette worked out as I wanted.

See you next time for further updates!
