Round of applause for our sponsors

Both of these characters were modeled using 3DS Max, ZBrush, and Marvelous Designer. I created a procedural bomb-fusings texture in Substance Designer to create the look for Reze's arms and apron. Both of the characters were baked using Marmoset Toolbag 3 and painted in Substance Painter.

I rigged both of the characters in Maya, one of the two unique challenges was the chainsaw arms. I didn't want to limit his wrist to only 1 axis, so to allow the twist to happen, the chainsaws' twist rotation had to be driven by the wrist, but the other axis' had to be driven by the elbow joint. Of course this breaks some of the realism of chainsaws being able to emerge from his arms, but that decision is a problem from the concept. Kind of a similar oversight of Wolverine's claws, but since those are internal mechanically I suppose it's not as much of an issue.
The second challenge were the chains that connect his jaw, I wanted them to move like how you would expect them to. They were the last part of the rig because I every method I tried didn't work, but what did end up working was probably the simplest. Each chain has its own IK spline, the base of the IK is constrained to either the jaw or the head (to add variety) and the rest of the clusters that control the path were constrained to the opposite piece (jaw or head).

I had a lot of fun adapting these characters into 3D and contributing to the vast pool of fan art that exists for this series, despite it only being about a year and a half old.
