Jules Darriulat - Concept Art
Through this entry I am hoping to show how I proceed to create concepts, take design decisions and use specific softwares to maximise my efficiency as a concept artist. Hope you enjoy my work!
Character concepts
Undead Warrior
This character was done for the preproduction of a short film project at Bournemouth University.
Final character sheet used to present the overall concept.
Primary sketch iterations: My goal is to generate many design iterations in order to find a good combination of visual elements. Creating many sketch variations allows my team and I to experience more with the character and make design decisions early on the project .
Additional researches, face and armour variations.
This model sheet was given to the 3D modeller. The different turns showcase the armour layout, body shape and tentacles / bones placements on the character in order for the modeller to have all the informations needed. The design has been made by keeping in mind the rigging and animation of the character so the concept doesn't need to be modified due to technical issues. The absence of a back view is voluntary as the character will never be seen from behind.
Drunken Sailor
This character was done for the preproduction of a short film project at Bournemouth University.
Final character sheet used to present the overall concept.
The full turn has been done for the 3D modeller to be able to accurately model the concept. The Tattoo closeups are shown for the texture artist to have a good understanding of them.
Mughal Warrior
This character was done for the character design course at Bournemouth University.
Final character sheet used to present the overall concept.
Sketches, mood-board and material closeup.
Medusa Fighter
This character was done as a personal project for training.
For this project, I challenged myself to create a concise line work render style, allowing the design to be clearly understood.
Big Boy
This character was done as a personal project for training.
Final character sheet used to present the overall concept.
Mama
This character was done as a personal project for training.
This shows how I usually proceed to render my character concepts from start to finish. I also use photo-bashing and 3D techniques on certain occasions depending on the desired visual style.
Environment Concepts
Geothermal Powerplant
This Environment was done as a personal project for training.
This concept has been done using a combination of painting and photo-bashing techniques.
Outpost Factory
This environment was done as a personal project for training.
This concept was made using a combination of painting, photo-bashing and 3D techniques. I first modelled the environment on Maya, lit the scene and added basic textures. I rendered the scene with Arnold and painted on top of it using Procreate.
The Portal
This environment was done as a personal project for training.
This concept has been done using a combination of painting, photo-bashing and 3D techniques. I first modelled the environment on Maya by using free of rights assets found online, lit the scene and added basic textures. I rendered the scene with Arnold and painted on top of it using Procreate.
This pipeline allows me to play with lighting and camera angles in order to find the perfect composition without starting to draw. This ends up being a huge timesaver and increase my efficiency.
Coloured Storyboard / Mood paintings
This project was done for the preproduction of a short film project at Bournemouth University.
These concepts were done using a combination of painting and 3D techniques. My team and I first modelled the environment on Maya, lit the scene and added basic textures. I rendered the scene with V-ray and painted on top of it using Procreate.
The coloured storyboard gave to our team a complete guideline for the lighting, character position and composition for each shot and served us as key art illustrations throughout the entire project.
Weapons / Vehicles
Modular Gun
This concept was done as a personal project for training.
This concept has been done using a combination of painting and 3D techniques. I first drew several silhouette sketches, modelled the selected silhouette on Maya, lit the scene and added basic textures. I rendered the scene with V-ray and painted on top of it using Procreate.
The challenge was to create a concise line work final render style to make the concept easily readable.
Low Orbit Bomber
This concept was done for the research and development course at Bournemouth University.
Final vehicle sheet used to present the overall concept.
Through this project, I explore different ways to quickly generate sketches and concepts by using various methods as: 2D sketches (img1), 2D silhouettes (img 2), Grease pencil on Blender (img 3) and Voxel sculpting on 3D Coat (img 4).
I found out that the most innovative and exciting methods were :
- Grease pencil on Blender as it can generate an infinite amount of original design.
- Voxel sculpting on 3D Coat which allows to create detailed designs in a few minutes.
