Meet Mat, the Old 80s Gamer

This is my entry to the 3rd Meet Mat Contest. I love videogames and this is my tribute to those first players in the 80s and 90s.

Final Submission for the Contest. This is the Mat Gamer from the 80s with an interesting game trilogy in its hand. Ready to spend the holidays playing all day long.

Update - 22 Dec 2023

So I opted for a new game on the screen, it is the Meet Mat's Adventure part 3! For the sweater, the geometric details fit the 80's overall look, and the Christmas theme, with red, green, and white. So this project is nearly in its final stage, I'll give another try at the Screen title, and the sweater pattern. Minor changes come ahead.

Update - 21 Dec 2023

I was working with some Space Invaders icons, and after doing some research I had to ditch them, there may be some copyright issues. So, I have to rethink the 80's video game iconography I will portray, on the TV screen and the sweater. For the screen, I watched a couple of tutorials on how to make a CRT Screen, which used the old TVs like the ones in the 80s. It came out pretty well I think.

Update - 19 Dec 2023

I've been working on each part of the project simultaneously; the head, the body, and the base. Once I'm satisfied with the material's base layer I step onto details, modifying the roughness, base color and metallic values.

This is the displacement so far. I'm not done yet, maybe some minor changes later, but this is the overall look I'm aiming for.

Each mesh has its own identity. Hopefully, I'll be able to transmit them, in conjunction, with the TV, the boy in the sweater, and the console.

Update - 15 Dec 2023

This is my reference sheet, I love the atmosphere in the old living rooms, it reminds me of my old playing time. I picked the classic Atari console and the Sony Trinitron.

The project is divided into three big "chunks". The base is the piece reserved for the console, the head will portray the classic TVs of those days, and the body will wear a timeless kid sweater, a very colorful one. The main materials are plastic, wood, fabric, and small pieces of metal. So is everything, for now, good luck to everyone and a happy contest.
