Model 001

by boryio on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Model 001 has been thoroughly tested and is ready to be launched into the world. Its structure, made of ceramic plastics, and its large size allow for the effortless lifting of tons of weight. Let's hope we don't encounter the same issues as with the previous model...

Round of applause for our sponsors

Hello again! I'm Borja Flores, and over the past few months, I've been immersed in the world of 3D art, specifically focusing on environment design and production. I'm thrilled to present my submissions for the "Rokiee Awards 2023."

For this submission, I have chosen to showcase a single project on which I have been working for the past few months. Hard Surface modeling has captivated my interest ever since I entered the world of 3D, and upon encountering a beautiful concept, I decided to bring it to life. I would like to express my gratitude to Melyssa for her outstanding work as a Concept Artist and for providing me with these fascinating illustrations.

I believe that this model could be useful for a short film, a movie, or any subject related to 3D animation. The modeling style is clearly inspired by mecha designs, but I always tend towards rounded shapes and soft edges to give the models a more cartoon-like appearance.

The modeling has been done in Autodesk Maya, and software like Marvelous Designer was utilized for the hood and hanging fabrics.

As for the texturing, it has been my favorite part! I absolutely adore Substance Painter, and combining it with Scatter Surface materials in Redshift has been both a significant challenge and an incredibly rewarding result.

Substance Sampler was also utilized for fabric development, allowing me to incorporate transparencies and embroidered designs using flower drawings and various motifs created beforehand.

To conclude, I would like to reflect on how Hard Surface modeling becomes a journey of exploration and a battle against meshes to achieve optimal results that are animation-friendly. I wrap up the project by presenting the remaining rendered images. I hope you enjoy them.
