A series of works that I've completed since summer of 2022 and our school's portfolio course from January to April!

Flooded Library

This piece is based on Tarmo Juhola's Flooded Library concept, and I want to thank Tarmo for the inspiration!

Since I removed the characters that drove much of the original concept's story, I had to come up with new ways of making the environment interesting. Therefore, I modified Tarmo's original concept and turned it into an abandoned, ruined environment as an homage to one of my greatest inspirations, Last of Us.

For this piece, I wanted to challenge myself by creating an interior environment. With every piece I make, I try to do something new. In this library, I focused on modularity, tileable materials, trimsheets, and utilizing RGBA masks in another UV channel to create variety.

It was fun making this piece, and though I'm not in love with it, I'm glad I challenged myself and tried new workflows. I'm excited to create more complex environments that focus even more on storytelling.

Spotlight

This piece is based on a film spotlight that I found on an auction site a year ago, that I thought looked really neat! My primary focus was to improve my realistic texturing and recreating the various material definitions that were on the reference.

However, as the piece progressed, I ended up unintentionally challenging myself by making multiple changes to the design to enhance the item. I modified the front and added back elements, which was a big departure from my comfort zone. But, I felt that I needed to push this piece visually. In hindsight, I'm very glad I committed to these changes because I think it improved the spotlight's visual impact!

I've received tons of feedback on this piece, and I'm glad that I didn't settle and kept iterating until I pushed the prop as far as I could until I got sick of looking at it.

You (Don't) Got Mail!

After completing my previous two portfolio pieces, I felt the need to improve upon what I perceived as my weaknesses. These weaknesses are as follows:
1. Subdued focus on storytelling
2. Easily stressed by trying to work from my own concepts and ideas
3. Lack of personality in my portfolio, nothing in it stands out as me.

Thus, I thought that with my third piece, I'd make a small scaled environment with a focus on my own concept, more focused storytelling, and a balance of props and environment related tasks. I made lots of moodboards and thumbnails of various ideas. However, I settled on the mail car after many discussions with classmates and teachers (Thanks, you guys are my rock!).

I had a lot of fun creating all the elements and got to sit a little more with Substance Designer to make the sand material. It was an enriching experience and I hope to make more pieces like this that are a little silly.

Gameboy Advance, Motion Tracker, Simon Stålenhag

A collection of work that I did in my spare time from summer to winter. These are works that have felt like legitimate projects that I'm happy with.
