"Ship me!" Robot

I want to achieve a cute and lovable robot design similar with WALL-E and R2D2. Also, I would like to preserve that mechanical feeling from the past, without much "advanced" technology.

Update - 20 Nov 2022

So, the one above I've chosen as my final render image.

It was a fun contest and I've learned a lot. Hope I did everything correct in the submission process since this is my first time participating :)

Wish all the participants good luck with their final renders, see you soon!

Update - 20 Nov 2022

Here are some pictures from different angles, just to get a better view of the details. It was a simple color scheme that I've chosen and it's based on the colors of a forklift. I wanted to achieve that "mechanical look".

Also, I've included a render of the boxes, I think they turned out really cool despite of using just a simple image projection (they were done in blender). I've painted over the "Ship me!" text which I think it adds a bit more of a cool effect. I think we can call the robot "Ship me Robot".

Update - 20 Nov 2022

Hi all, I've finally finished my project. Below is the texturing done in Substance painter.  Took me a while to UV unwrap it and texture it, but it turned out just as I imagine it. I've created separate UV maps for arms, body and forearms and feet. Added some grunge and dirt and some decals, and I think the end result looks good. I'll post the final render soon.

Update - 15 Nov 2022

Hello all, long time no see. Unfortunately, the world gets in the way sometimes, but I got back on track and hopefully everything will be finalized by the end of the contest. I've managed to finish my project, except UV unwrapping and texturing, so I am quick to do that one. After, it's just about setting the character and posing it. So hare are a few pictures on how it turned out. Hope you like it.

Step 3: Blocking (and a bit of details)

As you can see from the pictures, my blocking phase is very rough, just some general outlines. First, I went with the robot from the previous step just to have a feeling how it will look. I wanted a robot that has a chunk of butter on his back and a butter knife in his hand. While I still think that is a great idea (might use it later, for another project), I've changed my mind and went with a Robot that carries boxes. I think it gives me a bit more creative freedom and ideas to work with. After I was happy with my design, I slowly dived into the details. I keep my work in Blender for now, until texturing. More will follow soon.

Step 2: Referencing. There are a lot of great artists to get inspired from. However, my goal was just to take inspiration and not to follow or copy a particular concept. I wanted to see some designs, certain ideas, color matching, proportions and so on. Going through all those images made me decide that I want a utilitarian robot . Something like the one in Rick and Morty "You Pass the Butter", but with a little more purpose, and without an identity crisis :) (which might bring some changes from the original sketch: a change from "crab-legs" to "monkey-like"). When it comes to colors, I really like the bright orange look, turquoise and yellow. Might include blue as well. Right now I'll move to Step 3: Blocking, and keeping there references in mind, I will slowly move into the details of the body, arms, legs, etc. Will keep you posted.

Update - 19 Oct 2022

Hello all. This is a rough sketch of what I want to include in my project (since I'm not good at drawing, words help me express what I need). Usually I treat the "sketching" as a brainstorming session and afterwards I piece everything together. For this challenge I think a worn out robot would appeal better. Also, I would like to see him happy and surprised at the same time. Of course, this is just a rough idea, with the general elements that I would really like to include, some may be added later.

In Step 2, I go online for references. I tend to gather a lot of images that I think would best fit the concept that I have in my head. This helps me better understand the form/function/color/feeling of certain objects. Here is where I make certain color decisions and what form should the robot have (for example, how should the crab legs look).

In Step 3, I try to block everything out in Blender and slowly moving into the details. But I will come back with more information once I make some progress.
