Update - 1 Jul 2023

Making considerable progress on texturing. All that's left is to paint the rest of the graphic patterns on the body of the robot. Set up a lookdev environment in Redshift and re-created my materials.

Todo: more grime on tires, fix warped anisotropy on metal sides, add grunge to the glass, figure out better-looking 'hair' for the tires

I'm also going to have to figure out how to replicate the look of the purplish LED strip and eyes that light up. I thought it was covered in frosted glass, though it looks more like some kind of transmissive plastic. I thought about an animated texture. I could use MASH to instance some spheres, like bulbs?

Completed the modeling and brought the bot from Blender to Maya for UVs today! Admittedly, it would have been smarter to use a displacement map for the text. I got the topology to subdivide well, but it's not pretty by any means. However, having it as geometry will make it look really nice out of Substance, so I'm looking forward to texturing tomorrow.

I've been brainstorming what kind of pipeline I need for my integration shots. I think for now, I'll use Blender for camera tracking and import that into Maya for rigging, animation, and rendering. I haven't rigged in Maya before so that will be an adventure.

Brought into substance and masked some fill layers. Now the fun begins!

this is going to take a while...

Update - 26 Jun 2023

I thought it would be extra fun to document making a CG short this time around! Our protagonist is the adorable breed of robot that's invaded Los Angeles. This is for real, not a Black Mirror episode - I see these little guys every day, they do food delivery, apparently. AI's putting my Ubereats career in danger..

This week, my goal is to get them modeled and UV'ed. I have three months to model, texture, rig, animate, and integrate it into my footage for my Matchmoving class. You'll learn more about the story as I keep this page updated. Let's go!
