The inspiration for these designs is based on 16th-century gothic European castles and churches, as I think the Gothic movement is a great background tone for a vampire game, like Castlevania. I like the genre that heavily uses symmetry and repetition in its buildings such as the columns, floor patterns, and ceiling patterns. For the village house, I based it on a medieval village house to juxtapose the castle, as the house is asymmetrical and the building interior and exterior of the castle are mostly made up of symmetry in their patterns. I chose to paint using heavy hot pink, dark pink, dark red, and blood red colors to stray away from the conventional dark blue colors of castles in video games. Dhin's input and advice were great as he suggested I paint some backgrounds in isometric view as opposed to 1-point and 2-point perspectives as most linear platform games use isometric views as using a parallax feature will make the game be viewed as 1 point from the camera. My supervisor Brendan suggested to add heavy details and lighting and shadows, as flat colors would make the designs boring. I added shadows and only a little bit of lighting as Dihn would add lighting in the game engine.

Progress

I went through a process of researching and thumbnailing backgrounds, loading screens and such for the game. I never designed a castle type background so this was a great learning experience for me. I did some research on european castles and churches, mainly the 16th century ones as I believed that their patterns and designs could heavily set a tone for the game.

enemy animation

animation process

Andy did not produce any turnarounds or animations for the game so I try to take the initiative to animate at least one enemy for the game, as there was not that much time to animate all the enemies. I did a simple idle animation based on one of Andy's monsters, but I had to take some creative liberties to change the enemy, such as removing some limbs so it would be easier to animate. I decided to animate an one-eyed monster as it was something I could easily animate. I did the animation using Clip Studio Paint (EX version) as I used this program in the past to animate, and I didn't have enough time to learn another animation software.
