Round of applause for our sponsors

Hi all! My name is Madison Riley, and I am a graduating 3D environment artist from Falmouth University, who also enjoys some 2D art on the side. Over the past three years, I have been developing my 3D skills with the goal of becoming an environment artist - below is a collection of my work over the last couple of years! If you’d like to see more of my work, you can visit my page here: https://www.artstation.com/maddilriley

Search For a Star - Hidden Sanctuary (UE4 Environment)

So this was my entry for the SFAS competition! I got 7th place out of around 90 entries, coming 1st in both the Research and the Documentation category (if you're interested, you can read over that documentation here! https://maddilriley.itch.io/hidden-sanctuary) I spent around 5 weeks on this project, from concept to final scene, however, had a huge change of heart around the 4-week line so got the majority of the work done in about a week!

This was my first time making a fully stylized scene and it was really fun; I also learned a ton of things in-engine that I'm looking forward to applying in later projects. The foliage creation was massively satisfying, and implementation was a great process to learn. I'd like to go back in and improve the quality of the props, as I was running out of time and had to use early passes for the renders, and also add more to the surrounding area to really ground it in a game environment. So while this is still definitely a work-in-progress, I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops!

Stylised Warehouse (UE4 Environment)

This project was developed over about 3 weeks of development as a way to learn more about trim-sheets and tiling textures, as well as for a project I was working on with the university! I was aiming for a stylized look and trying to use beveled trim sheets to get the soft edges and have everything tie together well. I was also exploring making more modular environments! I would like to continue this scene looking at how I can bring in more variation into it while maintaining the modular aspects, and I'm looking forward to seeing how I can keep developing this piece!

Rumble Raiders - Team Project (Unity)

These are some examples of stylized work that were created for our team game Rumble Raiders, a multi-player dash top collect the most loot while avoiding some classic enemies! I created an assortment of UI, 3d artwork, and concept art for the game! As a team, we created one level based in a Jekyll-Hyde mansion as an example of the games theme, design, and artwork. It was completed in Unity, so I now have experience in both Unreal and Unity importing my own assets and building a scene!

Recreant - Team Project (Unity)

This is a small collection of props I completed for our second-year game project, Recreant. It was really fun and my first exploration with Substance Painter!

Stylized Handpainted props - Team Project (Unity)

This is another small collection of props from an early university project. The stylized assets were really fun to make and I really enjoyed hand painting them! I'd love to create more like this in future.

Industrial Studio - Likun Wang concept (UE4 Environment)

This scene is based on the Industrial Studio from the wonderful concept art of Likun Wang, which you can check out here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/zAkzZd

I was so inspired by the piece that Likun Wang had created, and so over a course of around 6 weeks, I created the scene below, with a focus on trim sheets, lighting, and layout. It was really enjoyable, and I learned a lot about utilizing trim and tiling; my plan going forward is to do a second pass on the texturing as I feel this is the area with the biggest need for improvement. I'd also like to try and get more of the mood of the initial blockout and concept coming through into the final piece.

Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my work - I'm really looking forward to my future projects, and what the future holds!
