I have always loved the look and concept of the US Navys phalanx CIWS and thought it would be a fun project. A phalanx CIWS is a close in weapon platform that is designed to protect and shoot down incoming Missiles.

Round of applause for our sponsors

The goal for this project was to create a portfolio piece that was as accurate as i could possible get to the real world phalanx gun, testing my observational skills and eye for detail. At first it was pretty hard getting the shape down but overall i am really happy with how it came out.

For this project i have made a low and high poly mesh models in Maya and then exporting them to Substance Painter where i would then bake down.  Textured the models in Painter and export them to Unreal Engine , make the materials and light the scene. During this pipeline if i needed to edit/fix some of the maps i would take them into Photoshop and edit them and export them back into Unreal or painter.

For me the biggest challenge in this piece was by far the ammo feed belt, trying to make relatively low poly and feeding from the ammo drum to the Vulcan main gun itself proved to be a really hard challenge for me but one that was eventually conquered.
