Voyager is a 3D animated project detailing the journey of the Myrician, an alien traveller, to a deserted planet Earth. Intent on finding as much as possible about the mysterious human race, he enters into an old museum to discover the memories held within. There is a strong presence of "memory" and "journey" themes in this project. I'd also like to think that there is some kind of moral or warning for the audience to take in: If we dont embrace a journey of change, only memories of our society might remain.
Im happy to say though that it might be open to interpretation. A few viewers had contrasting views on what the morals of the project might be
This can be considered to be my capstone project made during my final year at AUT. It is a completely self made project, so I was responsible for Voyager from the very concept to the end.
I had my lecturers to guide me through some steps, but I really enjoyed the problem solving aspect of creating such an intensive animated project
The animation was made with a combination of motion capture data and key frame animation. All hardsurface 3D models were made in Autodesk Maya and textured with Mari and Substance Painter.
(with the exception of some background buildings in the first scene, which were provided by kitbash3D.
The alien creature was sculpted in ZBrush and rigged using AdvancedSkeleton
Compositing was made with After Effects, including colour grading, dust particles, overlays, and moion blur effects
Rendering was done in Maya using Redshift
The first video contains an in-depth breakdown of the most relevant 3D models and environments
The second is a rough 3D animatic made with mocap data, so to understand the timing and animation of the alien creature. It also includes a 2D animation and some rough concepts of 3D models
