An Improbable Motorcycle, M4 and The Iron Giant

by giuliochiaramonte3d on 22 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Three projects that tell the story of the journey into hard surface modelling and texturing of the last months of my life.

AN IMPROBABLE MOTORCYCLE

I found the inspiration for my latest work scrolling instagram. The IG account @an_improbable_future posts images created by AI that focus on futuristic vehicles and technology.

This project is an Hard Surface project, the modelling part was the most consistent one.

When it's about 3D Modelling i often switch between Blender and Maya, being open-minded about the software you use get me to faster and better results.

I usually cut the UVs seams in Blender, it gives me more resources to work faster but i think that the best software to use to re-organize your multiple UDIMs is Maya.

Getting the right texturing wasn't easy, i wanted to add a personal touch giving the asset a story and giving the impression of being more used than the original inspiration.

And of course: "EVERY RESPECTABLE ASSET NEEDS A RESPECTABLE TURNTABLE."

M4 ASSAULT RIFLE.

This project was a nice challenge, once i finished this i realized how much i needed a new project to find that energy that every artist need in his/her creative life.

Luckily enough this asset was full of references to search for, having different variations of the real object means giving moe profound details to the 3D assets.

The focus of the project is of course the M4 an iconic weapon and a great hard surface exercise. From the blockout to the correct shapes to a good topology, that's the inevitable path for every 3D modeller.

After getting the UVs done in Maya it was time to switch to substance painter where i could give life to this asset.

And after all i created this 3D model, let's give it some personal detail.

I could have showcased this asset with a grey/black background but sometimes giving some context improves the results. I modelled and textured the bullets and case while the woodboards were downloaded from quixel megascan.

Last but not least: THE LIGHTING OF THE SCENE.

And as always: THE TURNTABLE.

THE IRON GIANT: "I am Superman"

The Iron Giant is one of the more iconic animation movie ever, an entire generation grew up watching and rewatching it. I wanted to give my 3D version of "Superman".

Giving shape and life to this character was very funny, every single part of its body was a little bit of a challenge.

The original Iron giant of the 2D animation movie is very stylized, i decided to bring my asset to a photorealist version.

And a special character needs a special pedestal.

In conclusion I learnt a lot going starting from scratches every single time, it was challenging but never difficult, it was long but never boring and of course it was very enjoyable. I hope somebody likes this but i hope much more to receive a lot of feedbacks and other artist giving me their opinions and way to improve my skills. Thank you TheRookies for offering this showcase and thanks to my coffee machine the best adventure assistant i could ever wish. See you next year.
