PATOPISTOU ! a 2D animated short film

Patopistou is a clown who was born that way. While he dreams of becoming a respected sculptor his face condemns him to a life of farcical jokes and other humiliations. As a last resort, he tries to escape his identity by mutilating his face. He suddenly becomes the renowned and successful artist he had always dreamt of being. However, his true nature is close to the surface and threatens to destroy his new life.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE 

I’ve always been fascinated by the jester archetype. Pagliacci, Pierrot,...tragicomic characters who are always the butt of the joke even when they are at their most miserable. Patopistou is similar and he strives to become more respectable but the way he looks makes it impossible. He is stuck in his body. He is always performing even when the audience is not here. In a way in I identify with this kind of character as I also struggle to be seen as a serious artist. I wanted to make a film with a cyclical structure representing the endless suffering of the character. Patopistou can never get away from himself and he can’t hide his self from the others. Also I wanted to do something that never takes itself too seriously. Ironically I wanted Patopistou! to be something you can laugh at!
