Celtic Woman

by chelseamaron on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

This is my Final Project for the Advanced Term at Think Tank Online. This character was based on a concept by Alexandra Jury, "Fulla", you can find their Artstation here: https://www.artstation.com/xelandra. I adapted some elements to have a bit more fusion of inspiration from Celtic and Norse.

Breakdown

References

First step for this concept was to gather references for all the different elements and combining ideas to start figuring out how each part should look.

Blocking Out

For this project I decided to jump into Marvelous Designer to block out the clothing for the character once I had a character with the right proportions as this character had a lot of cloth elements.  As I have a background in costume for theatre I found using Marvelous Designer an enjoyable experience and I particularly liked being able to tie a knot in the cloth belt in the program as I felt it gave this part a realistic look and feel.

Low/High Poly

Once the cloth elements were there I used Maya and Zbrush to create the other accessories.  I spent my time jumping back forth creating elements as I was adding details and making sure the topology and UVs were right at the same time.

Skin Details

I projected skin details onto the face of the character in Mudbox using an asset from Texturingxyz.  I then cleaned this up in Zbrush and added skin details to the rest of the character.

Texturing

I imported and baked the meshes in Substance Painter where I did all of the texturing for my character.

Hair

I created the hair and fur texture using xgen.  I used hair cards in clumps which I placed where required on both the head and a fur base geo that I created on top of the cloak.  This took many iterations of working out what worked and what did not.

Rendering

Finally I added everything into Marmoset where I focused on the look dev and built my scene.

Close Ups

I would like to thank my supervisors and classmates at Think Tank.  I have come a long way since starting at Think Tank a year ago when I had no experience in 3D and thanks to the guidance and feedback I have received I have learnt a lot.  I especially wanted to thank Babak Bina for the feedback and advice he gave during this project.
