Tides of Deception - Environment Design

by KerriWheeler on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Hi there, I am a third-year animation student at Yoobee College. I have always been passionate about environmental design in games and how they enhance their stories. I created this project as an experiment to see what I could create in a limited amount of time.

Tides of Deception

Tides of Deception is a point-and-click RPG game set in an alternative Victorian era. The player steps into the role of a dismissed ship captain. While struggling to come to terms with life on shore the captain finds themself entangled in a web of intrigue and dark secrets. They soon realise that there's more to the world they live in than they initially thought.

Captain's Study

This is my second and most recent project in Unreal Engine 5. I decided to challenge myself to make a small interior for my game concept in three weeks. I wanted to create a space that would help me to explore characterisation through environments. My goal was to create a space that felt lived in and that created insight into the person who it belonged to. I also wanted to play with how the mood of the space would change with different lighting setups.

I modelled a limited number of assets that I then used to populate the scene. I wanted to use a smaller amount of assets both due to the time constraint I had placed on myself and so that could focus on the scene's composition. I had a lot of fun challenging myself to create a cluttered-looking environment with only a few assets.

Other than the wallpaper and carpet which I got from Unreal Engine's Quixel Bridge I textured everything in Substance Painter. I wanted to add paintings into the scene to add more interest to the walls and create some nods to the Captain's backstory in the environment. However, I am not a strong painter so I found images from the National Gallery's creative commons collection to use.
