DOOM SCROLL by Heather Jarosz is a 5 look dress collection rendered in 3D CLO focusing on trim, hardware, and textile development.

The concept for this collection was based on the new age term ' Doom Scroll' - the act of scrolling on social media for long periods of time, over-consuming information.

I wanted to give the feeling of falling into a black hole with my textiles. Using Op Art  graphics, I created my textile designs in the texture editor window. I learned how to generate and use different maps to create unique textures. I then rendered them in different fabric qualities like shiny silk, velvet, and chiffon.

Next I started trim development. I learned how to create a basic sequin and apply it to my garments as a topstitch. I created a lace from a photo and then used different maps to render a realistic texture.

With the 'DOOM SCROLL' concept in mind, I developed custom hardware for my looks as well. I created a metal swirl shape and double D-ring buckle as an OBJ file that I then applied to my dress designs.

LOOK 1

In this look, I used the sequin as topstitch, creating a glitch design on the front and back. I also used my custom swirl hardware in the cut outs to further drive home the chaotic feeling of doom scrolling.

LOOK 2

Applying the custom lace I created to the sleeve cuffs and an iridescent tape to the sleeves of this dress, I added accents of color to this primarily monochromatic printed dress. I also added large square grommets to the hem, creating a new dimension and random chaos to the dress.

LOOK 3

Seen throughout all 5 looks I created custom avatars. These avatars wear a black full body turtleneck leotard layering piece that accentuates the details of each dress. Each avatar has custom hair and make-up, as well as vibrant colored 'doom scrolling' contacts. I created these by editing each skin map in Photoshop and applying them back into 3D CLO.

LOOK 4

I enjoyed playing around with scale while developing trim. Here I created a custom glass triangular sequin and applied it in clusters on parts of the dress. In IRL, this trim could be dangerous but in 3D CLO it conveys the sharp negative feelings that doom scrolling can have on the consumer.

LOOK 5

For this look I use a metallic bead trim I created, as well as an iridescent piping along the edge of each layered piece of the dress. The overtness of fabric and trim in this look mirrors an overstimulated mind.
