Projects from my first year

by dedoo on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

This is some of my best work from past year. About a year ago I set my mind to change my career and focus on becoming a 3D artist. This is some of the ones im most proud of.

[Mustang Low Orbit Fighter]

Modelled in Blender textured in substance painter. The first two images are the pure render output. Rendered in cycles. I then put the image in Photoshop and added a simple filter to give it a look of it being painted.

For this project i found some inspo in some artwork. (Center image) and worked off that a bit. Then took some images from Artstation and some specific searches from google for my reference.

At first I wanted to create a sort of dragster but with a feeling of old school cool. Some Cuban home made stuff. As I was working and the idea evolved I got some mayor ww2 vibes. The ship kinda looks like the fuselage of a ww2 fighter plane. So the ship got some more guns. And I wanted it instead to feel like some sort of earth defense force ship.

I'm using PureRef as my reference program. As it's easy to put all images in one place.

This is the progress. I first started to modell the ship. When the ship got some more details. I created the background hangar to get more of the vibe.
When the ship was finished I finished the background structure. The misc in the background: Vents/crane/officer are assets to fill the background. They are from Blenderkit.

For the light I used an HDRI to get more of a realistic lightning for the scene.

[The Merchant]

I had and idea for an traveling merchant with a cool cane and a big maxed out backpack with a lot of stuff packed in. The cane never made it but he got a shotgun instead to protect himself on the roads.

I have modeled everything you see on him. Blender for modelling and Substance Painter for texturing.

I had to scale down the size of the backpack as the hat clipped to much into it. And I liked the hat very much so it was the backpack who had to get smaller..

The backpack i filled with: Ammo-boxes, cans, books, scrolls, chickens, pans and blankets.
The hat is made of metal and he has some shoulder armour and a small hip plate armour.
The binocular is pretty much based entirely of the ones in Blade Runner 2049.

Here are some mixed progress images. I played around with clothes a bit before settling with a shorter robe. I thought the legs looked quite funny and wanted it to show.

And some chickens of course for company.

When I have time I hope to go back to this project and Animate him and put him in unreal and play around there some more.

Close up of the binoculars i modeled for him.

Here is the inspo I used for the project:

[Swedish Army Scout Speeder]

I wanted to create a collection of the Swedish armed forces in the future. This is one of two models I created.
Made in Blender and textures from Substance Painter.

Progress: It took a lot of inspiration from an AT walker from Star Wars. And from that I tried to do my own twist on it. I also look at old and current Swedish Armed forces vehicles and tried to blend the the soul of them into the craft.
The disc are supposed to be where the hoover effects come from.

Here is the inspo i used for this project.

[Scrapyard Mech]

I saw some quick drawn concept art for robots on Artstation by an artist I can't remember the name of. And it gave me this Idea to model. A sort of big barrel bot with a pilot on top and a big Vulcan machine gun on the side of it. I modeled it in Blender and textures are made in Substance Painter.

Progress:
This project took me around a month to finish. I really wanted to create something that had a lot of details so I really put effort in making everything perfect. I'm still quite proud if it.

Inspo: I mostly used inspo for creating misc on the bot. Things like gas cans and ships doors needed some reference.

[Recon Mech]

This was one of my first model that I thought was a good model. I went back about a month ago to make a new render of it because I never liked the first render I made of it.

This is also modeled in Blender and textures made i Substance Painter.

The facility and lights in the roof are modeled by me.
Rest of misc crates/computer/chains are background assets from Blenderkit.

I sadly don't have any progress images from this progress.

But my idea was to create a mech that supports infantry in the field. The mech also works as an communications relay for the troops. It also gather intel and send back to HQ.

When I did the textures for this i wanted to give it a worn out look. As it would had been in the field for a long time.

[Sergeant Fuchs]

This was the first real character I created. I wanted to do a buff alpha male with a cool gun.
Sculpted and modeled in Blender and textures in Substance Painter.

I had fun creating him and I think the backpack turned out pretty good.

The gun is based on Boba Fetts rifle.

Overall he turned out ok for being a first character creation. I will probably go back some time and do some refinements on this model.
