My first year at Digital Arts and Entertainment

by WilliamAhrens on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

This year is my first year DAE Howest, and over both the first semester as well as the second I've learned a lot. With the Rookies I can share what I've learned with the world.

Round of applause for our sponsors

In my first semester of DAE we had to make a 3D diorama with 5 props, 2 complex props (one of which had to be a vehicle prop) and 3 simple props. I decided to make a modified motorcycle and a shotgun for the complex props and for both a retexture to add storytelling to the scene, insinuating that they're "brothers".

Besides that I chose a fireplace with wooden logs as a simple prop, and then I added an American flag, with a carved toy plane and a demolition notice on the door of my main building.  This scene, and the story behind it, was heavily inspired by the game Days Gone, created by Bend Studio. The demolition notice has the games' main characters' name as an easter egg.

Besides the props we were instructed to make 3 building modules of our choice and we had to texture everything using phototextures to give it a Half-Life -esque look.

After the first semester a lot of new classes were open to us, one of which was Game Art. In this one we (so far) had two assignments, one of which was to make a WoW inspired weapon. This was the first time we did stylized creation and it was fun, so when I decided to think of the name I decided to go with an ironic joke.

My weapon was thusly named: "Gentle Kiss".

It was the assignment for Game Art that I was the most proud of as the first assignment showed I had a lot to learn when it came to texturing, and the weapon was a good step in the right direction.

Although 3D is not the only thing we learn here at DAE, we also learn to sketch, draw and paint, both digital as well as traditional. Here is an example of this:

The biggest part of this latest assignment was to do color studies of both real pictures as well as paintings from more traditional artists and then applying those color studies to our line-art.

This brought a healthy learning curve to the table and improved every students' digital painting skills.

And that was all I wanted to show, feel free to ask questions after the 23d of June, when the exams are done and all students will be available. Thank you for looking through my submission and have a wonderfull day.
