Here is my prop intended for use in game workflows! A project that continued to evolve during my time at Gnomon. Learning so much about creating ready to use game assets I'm thrilled to present my Laser Rifle Prop.

Laser Rifle Game Prop

Concept art by Fernando Correa

This was a great project for me while learning the workflow for game assets and props. I made this prop over the course of a few classes from Gnomon. Over time it evolved to a game ready asset that began as just a project to study hardsurface modeling.

Finding the project for my class final.

This is the concept art I chose for my final project in my Hardsurface 2 class at Gnomon. Fernando Correa produces such amazing art and when presented the opportunity to model anything involving hard surface I went straight to work on this Laser Rifle.

Growing up with fallout and wasteland I saw this opportunity to bring something that captured the genre in a concept and be able to bring it to a game ready asset during my time at Gnomon has been a dream! I never would have thought I'd be right here showing this project to you!

Big shout out and highly recommend checking out his art works and concepts! @fc_arts_

This project challenged my skills to no end.

I was just getting comfortable with modeling in general with it being the beginning of my 2nd year at Gnomon  this quickly became a passion project for me as the classes rolled on. I love the fallout/wasteland type games and art! Being able to model something inspired by that setting was so much fun.

Over the course of 3 classes the Laser Rifle evolved past it original intent! It began as a hardsurface final, then was brought into my Props for Games class where I sculpted, and prepared the model for detail baking from ZBrush into substance painter. Then began the process of cleaning up the overall look dialing in the metals and details to really bring it to life! It eventually became a prop to use in Unreal Engine 5 during my VFX for Games class.

Preparing the Prop for use in engine.

The modeling was refined over the 2 mentioned classes ending up with a game ready model and textures.

This was my first attempt at creating something for game engine and learning that side of the workflow in the game pipeline. Taking the time to learn asset presentation in Marmoset Toolbag, how to texture pack, optimizing a model for games, and high poly sculpting in Zbrush to refine the details for texture baking.

Here is the final result in Unreal Engine 5 with a quick idea to test and continue developing to a usable asset for games. Using simple cards and the Niagara system in Unreal to create a quick look at what the gun might fire off when used in game.

Thank you for checking out the Laser Rifle Game Prop!

The final parts of the project were wrapped up during my VFX for Games class at Gnomon. What began as learning alpha cards and studying the Niagara systems within Unreal 5, quickly turned into developing laser beam set ups, I'm still currently developing this project and will continue to push my knowledge through this project.

Having the opportunity to bring an idea to a final product over the course of 3 classes that just happened to begin as something to model for a class project. I'm so thankful for my teachers sharing their knowledge and being able to present this project for the rookies really has been surreal!
