by ChoiMyeongSoo on 30 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

The Komodo dragon is currently listed as an endangered species. Deer poaching by humans has reduced their prey and their numbers have declined drastically due to habitat destruction. They go out in search of food and fight for survival.

Modeling

At the beginning of the modeling work, I used Zbrush to make a large frame, and then I modeled different scales for each part of the komodo dragon separately and textured the displacement map in Mari. In order to realistically create the scales of the actual komodo dragon, I worked by finding references for each part. After working on topology in Maya, I additionally worked scars and broken scales in Zbrush.

I collected a lot of references to give a realistic feeling, and among them, I selected and referenced similar patterns and colors.

Texture

I mainly worked on the substance painter. To express the numerous colors of the scales, dozens of layers were built up. In order to express dust and dirt on the scales, I used several maps as masks and worked on textures.

Environment

I wanted to show the komodo dragon in a various environments. I mainly worked with Komodo Island as a reference.

Most of the props were made using Megascans, and some trees were crafted and used in Speedtree.

Animation

From Komodo dragon's movement to fighting, I worked on key animations by referring to real Komodo dragon videos.

Lighting & lookdev

I took a camera so that I could take various poses and emphasize what I wanted to show depending on the scene.

In the case of the camera, I tried to compose my video to feel like a real documentary in line with the planning intention by referring to actual documentary footage.

In the case of lighting, I worked to ensure that the colors and scales had a good luster, and I worked to create the feeling of real natural light.

Rendering & Final

Rendered using v-ray in Maya.

The sky, background composition, and correction were done in nuke.
