As he falls through the sky, Finn, a former pop star, with very current regrets, is portal-ed to different times in his life and faced with the history of his relationship with his childhood best friend, Rven. Starstruck Memories uses the song Tongue Tied Twisted by the band Suit Up, Soldier as the musical core for this exploration of the ups and downs of a relationship and what it means to apologize and move forward from one's mistakes.

Starstruck Memories is the 2D animated music video I created for my thesis film at School of Visual Arts, NYC. It features characters from a story I’ve been developing for 6 years now, and serves as a sort of teaser for their larger saga! I hope to one day be able to tell the full story, but also like to think that this film stands on its own, as a satisfying peek into their lives and journey.

Character Lineup

Finn

Finn is a musician who has recently left behind his life in the limelight. Much more anxious in his teens, he went through a traumatic event that led to him becoming a narcissistic pop star sensation. Now he takes a moment to look back and see how that life may have caused him to ruin his relationship with his childhood friend, Rven.

Since we see the two leads at various different time periods in their life, I made sure to create references for each.

Rven

Rven is Finn’s childhood friend. Formerly a bubbly and outgoing fire magician, he now tends to keep to himself. He’s been struggling with how much Finn changed when he rose to fame.

Since we see the two leads at various different time periods in their life, I made sure to create references for each.

Colorscript

A big priority for me during the process of creating this film was to make sure I enjoyed how the colors looked! I really dislike when I look back on old work and the palette disappoints me, so I took extra steps to make sure the colors were what I wanted, by creating a comprehensive colorscript for the film. Since there were around 13 different locations to cover, it wasn't the easiest task, but I'm so glad I decided to do it!

You'll see some changes from this colorscript to the final film, the biggest one being the color of the glow in the eye cave! I got some great feedback from one of my thesis advisors, Dennis, about how a blue would interact better with the more pink-ish palettes I ended up choosing for the characters for that sequence.

Background Process

Here's a process view of one of the backgrounds in what I like to jokingly call "The Exposition Chamber"! I've included even the roughest initial thumbnails so you can get a feel for what I do when I first hit pen to paper.

It was an interesting challenge to figure out compositions for this sequence, with Finn running in the foreground.

Lastly, here's the poster for the film!

Thank you for taking the time to look through my entry; I hope you enjoyed it! You can find more work about these characters on my website or YouTube, linked below!
