Greetings, I am Arvid Van Thorre, a final-year student at DAE, Belgium, specializing in the fields of VFX, 3D production, and Animation.
Allow me to show a glimpse of my journey so far during my period at DAE.

The Nutcracker

In this project, I attempted to merge a painting by Zhang Da Zhong with the movie "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms." The biggest challenge I faced was recreating the soldier to closely match its appearance in the movie itself. This was also my first project using The Foundry's Mari software to handle extensive texture work, which further intensified my passion for texturing.

Old Grolsch bottle

In this project, my main goal was to expand my skills in look development. To achieve this, I explored the capabilities of Arnold Maya's shading nodes in conjunction with Substance Painter. By focusing on meticulous attention to detail and utilizing compositing techniques, I was able to achieve the desired outcome for the project.

Tiny Robot Vector

As I developed a fondness for creating product renders, I decided to take on a new project: recreating the Robot Vector from Anki. Utilizing Maya and Arnold, I crafted this asset with meticulous attention to detail. To make it visually appealing, I enhanced it using Lightroom. My ultimate goal was to achieve a realistic look with subtle surface imperfections while keeping the overall design clean.

Sound Mixer

The main goal of this project was to create a lifelike sound mixer board. I used Maya to model all the individual pieces and relied on Mari for creating the textures and imperfections, to enhance its appearance.

The Barrel Room

The goal was to create a cinematic montage of the barrel room of Château Montrose without needing to film their itself by recreating it fully in cg. Since unreal engine starts to get a lot of attention for the vfx industry I wanted to look how realistic I could get it inside unreal 5 engine, capitalizing on the cutting-edge Lumen system during its early release phase.

I used Maya for all the modelling tasks, while the creation of textures took place in Mari and Substance Designer.

cyborg

My primary focus was to learn face tracking using PFTrack in combination with KeenTools and seamlessly integrate it into the footage.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my vfx Rookies Entry. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the work I presented. I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts and feedback on it. Your input is valuable to me, so please feel free to share your impressions!
