Graduation Project: The City of Ketterdam

For my graduation project I decided to design Ketterdam, a location from the novel ‘Six of Crows’ by Leigh Bardugo. The book follows a crew of thieves known as ‘The Dregs’ in their endeavours through the bustling city of Ketterdam, where anything can be had for the right price.

I was intrigued by the mysterious mood of this crime infested town, characterised by its sprawling canals and dark atmosphere. I decided to focus mainly on the environment of 5th Harbor, the area of the city controlled by our protagonists’ gang.

When designing the harbor I began by figuring out the general layout, which I based off of 17th century Amsterdam, one of the main inspirations for this city. Once that was done I proceeded to work back and forth between designing the buildings, and finding the specific placement for them. Ketterdam is described as a rapidly growing city, so I arranged it in a chaotic way with buildings climbing on top of each other, growing vertically as they fight for space.

Sketches of the docks to the north and south side of the harbor, respectively.

Facade designs for the buildings and the Crow Club.

When designing ‘The Crow Club’, a gambling hall run by ‘The Dregs’, I ended up going with a building that extends over a canal. From this bridge like structure, the gang can control this entry to the city, demonstrating their stranglehold over this part of town.

I would like to thank Danar Worya, Nils Carstens and Aurélien Fournier for the excellent feedback and support they provided. Without them this project wouldn’t have been the same.

This year I got to work alongside my classmates for "The City of Karnak", one of the the Game Art/CGI Projects at New3dge, laying the foundation for the Game Art and CGI students, whose works are showcased in the subsequent slider presentation, bringing the initial concepts to life.

I was tasked with designing the Boss Room, an ancient tomb of a greedy Pharaoh who was cursed by the gods.

This was my first time working on a long term group project and it was an amazing experience where I got exposed to the joys and challenges of working in a team. I'd like to thank my fellow group members, Jerome Bianchi, Celine Cariou, Anne Fichet and Regin Wellander not only for the beautiful work they did but also for being great teammates, as well as Karine Villette, Timo Peter and Aurélien Fournier for the invaluable guidance they gave us.

Personal Porfolio

I love the idea behind this  monster hunters' fort I did during Max Schiller's class and I would love to revisit this world in future projects.

I made this image for Tomas Muir's class at New3dge, and had a blast with the briefs that he gave us every week! This one is based on the crusades, but in a world with magic.

I would like to thank Aurélien Fournier and Fabien Roumazeilles for creating such an incredible course, as well as all the instructors who have been so important in my artistic development, and the New3dge team for their support.

Finally I would like to leave a special thanks to all my classmates, who made these two years the most incredible, enjoyable and formative period of my life.
Love you all <3
