Hi everyone, I'm happy to share with you some of my best projects from my portfolio. I feel that I have grown so much as an artist during this last year and I'm really proud of the steps I'm taking towards the vfx industry. In this entry I tried to showcase my skills as an environment/hard-surface modeler.

Big cave enviroment sculpt

Everything you see in the scene was sculpted by me in zbrush (except for the little rocks scattered all over the place that are from Quixel Megascans "ROUNDED COBBLE PACK").

After I finished sculpting each patch I used the (decimation Master) and exported them as obj. Then I proceded to position by hand the bigger rocks and to scatter with  Maya's MASH toll the little rocks. For the lighting I just used one light and then added Arnold's atmospheric volume. It was a fun project to work on, especially because is the first one of this kind in my portfolio.

HardHead

from a concept of the amazing Andre Mealha.

This is one of two assets I modelled as part of a 3d modeling Mentorship by the amazing Gennaro Esposito.  Modeling this asset was challenging , especially because it's mostly a curve surface. I started by allining a rough blockout with the reference, once everything was in the right place I smoothed the blockout  and then used it as a base for all the booleans operations. After the booleans, the resulting dense meshes were used as a lidar for the retopo; that allowed me to obtain a really clean base mesh without pinches. Next I proceeded to uv unwrap everything and organise the uvs in different udims based on the material. For the Lighting I used  6 mesh lights (2 for the specular effect on the glass, 2 as pupils and 2 for the lighting the inside of the head), 1 sky dome light and 3 arealights.

Steiner Military Marine Binoculars

This is the first assets I modelled as part of a 3d modeling Mentorship by Gennaro Esposito. For this project I didn't do a line up but it was modelled completely by eyeballing the references. By modeling this asset I was able to consolidate my subdiviosn modeling skills, but beyond that I was able to learn how to extract more complex shapes by combining different meshes.

First I created a blockout composed of simple shapes (main body, central part, lense part, eye part), after refining them I combined the main body with the lense part and I retopologize them to obtain a single mesh. Once everything was topologically correct I proceeded to model al the missing parts and then I uv unwraped everything. The uvs were dived in diffrent udims based on matreials. I really enjoyed lighting this project; to light it I used 2 diffrent mesh lights to obtain a nice specular effect on the lenses, in addition I used 2 light to obtain a nice rim light effect  and 1 skydome light. I organised the outliner using a production naming convention.

Darth Vader Helmet

Since I'm a Star Wars fan, I wanted to model something from the Star Wars world, and I thought what's better than one of the most iconic character. At the time i modelled this asset I wasn't very comfortable with the changes in design direction, so it was quite a challenge, but I'm really proud of the end result.

I first found some references on the internet and then I imported them into maya for the line up. For this project I didn't use any booleans, but simply modeled with a limited number of polygons and fine-tuned the mesh as I went. Once the modeling was finished I unwrapped the uvs; Finally for the render I created a gray sahder and positioned a couple of arealights and a dome light.
