Volleyball Girl
In this project, Volleyball Girl, I wanted to apply the knowledge I have been learning and apply new techniques and programs. I hope you like it.
I always start by collecting a wide variety of references and selecting characters similar to the concept I'm working on. This way, I can test what works and what doesn't, and define a style in terms of volumes and textures.
One of the first challenges I faced with the Volleyball Girl project was deciding on the style to follow. The concept presented two very different styles: one similar to the movie "The Willoughbys" and the other in the Disney/Pixar line. In the end, I opted for the latter.
Usually, when I create cartoon-style characters, I like to do the whole process in Maya. This allows me to speed up the work by avoiding retopology and keeping a simple style that achieves clean volumes.
I used Marvelous Designer to simulate the clothing. It was an interesting and challenging process, as I had to learn to master this tool from scratch and make sure the simulation worked correctly.
Once I had the base model and the simulated clothing, I moved on to the texturing stage using Substance Painter.
The hair part was one of the most fun to create, I used XGen, I had already used it on other characters but I had never worked with long hair before.
