Algal guard is a finished project made by 6 students from DAE for the course: Group Projects, and was created in one semester. The game simulates a bacterial ecosystem inside of an algae, and is created to give younger students of age 9-16 a fun educational experience on the working of this micro world.

Round of applause for our sponsors

Welcome to the world of Algal Guard!

This world displays the microscopically small world of bacteria that live inside of an algae! Swim around with your swarm of bacteria, kill or protect others, gain different abilities, and destroy or save the ecosystem!

Explore, evolve and survive!

In Algal Guard you explore a microbiome inside of an algue while collecting food and experience orbs to help your bacteria split and level up.

But beware, you will encounter many unique types of bacteria, some of whom will try to escape, while others will hunt you down. As you swim around the microbiome, you can also hunt other bacteria by colliding with them.

Destroying your competition will reward you with food and experience but, you can also earn experience by producing vitamins and giving them to the large immune cells on the walls.

Depending on your behavior towards the immune system, they will either provide protection or try to destroy you.

One of the main features of the game is the ability to form alliances with the immune system. If you ally with them, you can hide behind the immune cells when in danger, allowing you to continue your exploration and survival.

Evolve your bacteria and unlock different skills!

To make each playthrough more unique and personal we added a skilltree into the game where you can enhance your bacteria's abilities for every 5 level ups.

With this system, you can upgrade your bacteria's stats, such as health, movement speed, and reproduction rate, by dividing upgrade points between them. After that you can also select a new ability for your bacteria, depending on your level.

These abilities can either be passive or active, and the selection of abilities changes based on your alignment with the immune system.

If you are allied with the immune system, you will have access to a unique set of abilities that will help you work together to maintain the ecosystem's balance.

However, if you choose to go against the immune system, you will have access to a different set of abilities that can help you become more aggressive and competitive.

Compete with your classmates on the Leaderboard!

To make the game even more exciting, we decided to add a leaderboard to our game. When you start playing, you can choose a name for yourself, and when the game ends, your score will be automatically uploaded to the leaderboard.

We believe that this feature will not only encourage healthy competition, but will also make the game more engaging and enjoyable for students.

As developers, we also found the game to be more exciting and fun with the added level of competition, and hope that students will feel the same way.

Defeat the evil nematode!

We decided to end the game with a boss fight. Once you reach a certain level, i won't spoil which one, the boss spawns.

The boss is introduced by a large shadow moving in the background. This can be quite surprising the first time you see it happen, especially if you don't expect it. After this warning you have about a minute of time to prepare before the boss reaches you.

The boss moves and behaves unlike any of the other opponents in the game. It moves straight through walls and eats anything it sees.

In order to defeat it you will have to attack it from the side. Luckily nearly all of your abilities have a special effect used on the boss, allow you to stun the boss or blow it away.

The boss is inspired by nematodes, which are very small worms. And just like nematodes, it can split into 2 separate worms when cut in the middle. This requires you to plan out which part of the boss to attack, risking being overwhelmed by multiple bosses attacking you at once.
