Bent Out of Shape

When a bright, circular woman moves in to a dull, square neighborhood, things begin to change... much to her square neighbor's dismay. This senior thesis film was fully created by Chloe Merwin in all aspects!

Round of applause for our sponsors

This film is lighthearted, quirky, and fun, but still carries more serious and important undertones in its message. With "Bent Out of Shape," I hope to offer a new perspective on how remaining close-minded and leading with judgement can affect the world around us. Not only is this film about overcoming prejudices, but it also focuses on the dynamic between children and parents who may be overbearing in their attempts to control, or "shape," their kids. Through watching this film, viewers will hopefully have a chance to self-reflect as well as reflect on the world around them.

             Here's the short film!

Frame Rate Character Tests!

Here is a character animation test that was completed early in production. I made this when attempting to figure out how frame rate could possibly come into play with each character's personality.

I ultimately chose to animate my circle character at 24fps, and my square characters at 12fps. You'll notice that the square characters move into 24fps by the end of the film, though, and this choice was made to support the idea of the square characters evolving into more accepting and socially developed versions of themselves.

Visual Development!

Here are some cut characters and visdev work from earlier versions of the story!

Thanks so much for looking!

I hope you enjoy this project as much as I enjoyed making it!
