Wooden RIG.B

Flavio Flüeler
by FlayFlavio on 7 Apr 2023 for Autodesk - RIG.B

After seeing a lot of metal, I decided I wanted to go a slightly different way. This is where the wood came in. The idea behind the design: After the discovery of an old robot in the sea, the robot's parts were replaced with familiar materials by the villagers. The robot was then repurposed for a new use.

Texturing

Once I was content with the color distribution, I launched the Substance Painter software. I took some time to get accustomed to the user interface and then began creating the textures.

Getting familiar

After downloading all the necessary files, I eagerly took a first look. I was immediately struck by the impressive quality of the model and the prospect of working with such a high quality object was exciting. Next, I turned my attention to the UV map, which I knew would be crucial for texturing. At this point I was simply overwhelmed. Up to this point I had never worked with UDIMS and had only heard the term in passing. Especially the alignment and arrangement was impressive to me.

To get a better understanding of the materials needed and where they belonged, I quickly assigned different colours to the model.

The beginning

Metal here... metal there... but what about some good old wood?

This is the beginning of my documentation on texturing RIG.B. My idea is to cover RIG.B mainly in wood and highlight the main mechanical parts in a golden hue to create an interesting contrast between the two materials. The story I have in mind for the robot goes like this: Fishermen from a wooden town built on stilts on the sea discovered this robot in the water one day. The rusty parts were gradually replaced by materials that were familiar to the fishermen. The main mechanical parts of the robot have been replaced and it is now a permanent fixture in the village, serving mainly in an inn and helping the fishermen with various jobs in the harbour.
