To the Stars
To the stars is an animated short done during our graduation year at Mopa in 2022. Directed by Anaïs Le Morvan, Vincent Tran, Zoë Souvay, Julie Choucroun, Samaël Pioch and Florian Gourmelen.
A Soviet cosmonaut is sent to space. Successive failures cut him from its base. Condemned to die, he meets Laïka, a cosmonaut dog who died a few years before him, who came to accompany him to the afterlife.
We wanted to make a story about letting go, about humbleness in the face of life, and the forgiveness of a little dog, who was sent to die in space in 1957 to serve a purpose that was decided to be greater than her life.
It is our way of making a homage to the people and animals that gave their lives during the period of the space race.
Some concept art and storyboard excerpts. We did a lot of research into the time period, but also needed a lot of exploration to render an idea of what the dream like space sequence of the film would look like.
We especially put a lot of care into reproducing Vostok, the space capsule that was used by the USSR to send cosmonauts into orbit between 1960 and 1963, since the story is roughly set between Laika's departure and Yuri Gagarin's flight into orbit.
Colorboard for the film by Vincent Tran. The first half is quite historical inspired in its mood and ambiance, and it later devolves into the fantastical colors of the space like afterlife.
Character renders. Our cosmonauts has 3 different texture sets to reflect his physical and internal changes throughout the story.
A view of space from the end of the film. The look was achieved through a layering of 2D VFX, Ebsynth AI generated FX and Houdini particles in Nuke.
