Dylan Collins - Concept Art and Illustration
Hi everyone! Here is my entry for the Rookies with some of my favourite work that I've done at my 2 years studying at CDW Studios
For this piece the brief was to do an illustration on a topic of free choice. I chose to do an underwater piece to challenge myself with learning how to paint underwater scenes realistically with understanding lighting and focusing on atmosphere.
For one of my character design classes the brief was to design a type of character from an existing property which I decided to choose a Jedi from Star wars. My Jedi is a force sensitive droid which after escaping its restraints learned to be a Jedi determined to free all humans and droids from slavery. I wanted the character to be reserved and mysterious, the type of character to lurk in the shadows which I felt I achieved this visually in my design
Studies
The first image is study on a piece by one of my favourite artists Jeremy Fenske. I studied and watched his illustration process. The second image is a study from ref provided by my instructor.
This piece I went for a steampunk dystopian aesthetic in which this city resides in these huge pipes in the sky.
ATLAS
The titan condemned to hold up the heavens for eternity
This year one of my briefs was to design a line-up of 4 characters who exist in the same universe which are based off an existing mythology/religion combined with a new context/aesthetic. I decided to choose Greek mythology combined with the Cyberpunk Aesthetic
For the design of my character I decided to do a twist on the mythos by having the 'heavens' holding up Atlas instead. In my cyberpunk world, Atlas is being held up by this sentient A.I which uses Atlas as a host. Atlas dwells in the underbelly of the city which is run by Zeus and the other Gods in which himself and the A.I secretly scheme and run parts of the city without having to lift a finger.
Part of the brief was to choose one of the 4 characters and do a final illustration of them which I chose Atlas. Doing this illustration allowed me to make improvements and changes to my original design. I used blender to model and texture up the sphere which I then painted over in photoshop. This Illustration is W.I.P as I am still working on it for my assessment at the time of this submission.
