Art of Fennel - Journey of Beginning

MADDEN REALM

'Protect your mind, protect your soul,' they said, 'shall you lost, the world will have you devoured.'

Julius, our protagonist, enter the Madden Realm when he fell into a coma. He soon realized it is a world different to reality, all of them are souls that 'invited' by the Queen. He needs to find a way out from the realm before he started to lose his mind and trapped in there forever.

Madden Realm is a personal project that I did in my final semester. Since I was given a chance to create whatever I wanted, I decided to revisit an idea I had created when I was in middle school. I renourish it with my now more mature mind and drawing skills which I learned in school. I decided to make it a game project and go with psychological horror and make the realm similar to a dark version of Alice in Wonderland.

FROM THE EARTH

In the 1980s after the Vietnam war, for an unknown reason, the plants had a rapid mutation and destroyed human society. A sergeant, Reynold was given an order to transport supplies to a survivor camp when he and his comrades had encountered numerous danger when passing through the woods. While fighting to survive from the fierce woods, they discover the true secret of the mutation.

From The Earth is a group project done in my final year. It is the first time I worked collaboratively to create a series of concept arts. It was also my first time challenged themes like the post-apocalypse and Vietnam war era. It was a meaningful experience, especially one of the challenges was maintaining the same quality of works, and made sure all of our works looked belonged to the world we created. 

SASHA

A kind little girl named Sasha accidentally fell into a rift that connects life and death. She was all by herself but then Woles, a demigod spirit guide showed up and protect Sasha from danger. Together, they started an exciting journey that will helps Sasha to escape the rift.

Sasha was a project based on Russian culture. It was fun to research a culture that different to my own and apply it to the characters. Sasha had a balalaika, it is an instrument of Russia which often used for Russian folk music and dancing. Hence for Sasha's costume, which is inspired by Russian folk music costume.

The idea of Woles was based on Veles, the god of the underworld from Slavic mythology. I want to make a creature that was friendly and able to guide and protect the main character in the rift. That's why I chose wolf and owl, which were two of the symbol of Veles, and combined them to create a new character. Veles was also known as the god of music, which inspired me to make Woles likes music so that he can connect more with Sasha.

Matte Paintings

Matte painting is a very fun technique I had learned during my studies at the school. I enjoyed using 3D as the base and using the matte painting technique to achieve my visual goal. It was a fun experience to see how it progressed from a 3D base to final artwork.

Cyberpunk City

It was a fun experience to make a street with Blender and using matte painting technique to add the cyberpunk elements afterwards. One of the major challenges I've faced was technical issues, but I'm grateful I was able to overcome it and achieved what I wanted. 

The Garden

The Garden was my first time using 3D as the base. The whole process was very fun and challenging and it turned out better than I expected. It was inspired by ancient Greek temple and Roman Thermae.

Here are some early artworks and projects I've done during my studies. All of them are my personal favourite and I think it is worth showing to you all. Compare them with my works above, it really shows how far I've come as a student and artist.
