First texturing personal project: a creature that comes from heaven

Round of applause for our sponsors

Hello everyone, this is my first personal project, the official start of my journey into the 3D world!

In this project I had the chance to collaborate with my colleagues in CG art and to compare my work: I managed to give my best thanks to precious advice, help and constructive criticism.

It all started from a concept I came up one night, I liked it a lot and decided to develop it during this last month. So I drew the idea that I had in my mind, and the next day I met with a colleague of mine, Andrea, who helped me develop the character I had sketched.

Then I started modelling my character - I am not a modeller though, so after several attempts on ZBrush I asked the very kind Simone to give me a hand with the main volumes, he immediately sent me the character with basic volumes and musculature and from there I was able to continue with the whole process of ''feminisation'' of the model. I wanted it to be elegant, refined, as if it came from heaven. Now at this point another colleague of mine, Andrea, came to my aid by giving me input to follow the muscles and proportions without deform the character.

After that I moved to Substance and finally started playing with textures. It took me quite a while because I had never textured leather before, it's not easy to make it (look) realistic, and only after several attempts, tutorials, and levels I achieved a satisfying level of texture.

I worked in layers, starting with a basic colour and gradually adding layers of shadows, capillaries, veins, patches of colour that could simulate as much as possible a real complexion.

I liked the idea of a powerful creature,  very slender physicality, but at the same time with a skin that would give some hint of ''swollen'' so I worked a lot on the colouring by inserting red, purple, green in certain points in greater quantities to give that ''bruised'' effect.

As a last thing I concentrated on all the details, including veins, more obvious bruises, scratches and scars. I played with effects, filters and brushes. I also inserted a scar in the middle of the creature's belly, it gave me a feeling of mystery (why would a creature from the sky have it?).

So here are the first renders done on Substance, I'm so happy with the result, it's exactly how I imagined it and it perfectly conveys the feelings I had when I drew it: it's courtly, mysterious, powerful but at the same time so fragile and elegant.

it has been a constructive project in so many ways: the collaboration with others, the listening, the self-criticism and the tenacity in the face of problems when I still couldn't achieve the result I had in mind at the beginning.

Enjoy, see you soon with news, I want to put it in a custom-made setting!
