PlagueAxe - Game Ready Asset

This game ready asset was an opportunity to get more experience with the high poly sculpt and bake pipeline, as well as have fun with a stylized prop. I used Maya, ZBrush and Substance Painter for this project and Marmoset for rendering.

The PlagueAxe is used to mine plague infected stone, in an attempt to cleanse the lands above. It's dangerous work and even the tools themselves can become infected. Concentrated plague gems are the only thing keeping the miners (relatively) safe.

Final asset is 5,728 polys with string, 3,810 without string. I kept the string for the render but in-game it can be removed for performance. All unwrapped to one UV map, with mirrored UVs to save space.

Adding character to this asset was important. The colours, posture and lighting all contribute to character building.

My original plan was to build a minecart and scene, which shows in the reference. I decided to scale the project back to focus on polishing one asset to a high standard.

My original concept. I played around with a few ideas, but as soon as I added the cogs for eyes I knew this was the design I wanted.
