For this piece, my goal was to be able to recreate the mood and feel of the original concept as much as possible, but I also wanted to add some storytelling elements in a second shot. I also decided to create a modular kit in order to learn more about the workflow.

Round of applause for our sponsors

I loved playing Ghost of Tsushima so when I was looking for a concept to recreate for my portfolio I immediately started looking for concept art of the game.

For this piece, my goal was to be able to recreate the mood and feel of the original concept as much as possible, but I also wanted to add some storytelling elements in a second shot. I also decided to create a modular kit in order to learn more about the workflow. Interestingly, this is the first project where I genuinely took pleasure to refine the lighting over and over again in order to get as close to the concept as possible. I feel like I’m finally starting to grasp the subtleties of lighting in Unreal Engine and I can’t wait to work on new projects with this newly-acquired knowledge!

I want to thank Mitch Mohrhauser from Sucker Punch for allowing me to recreate his amazing concept: https://www.artstation.com/mitchmohrhauser

Thanks a bunch to the great artists of various Discord servers who kept giving me invaluable feedback. Special thanks to Tim Winkelmann for his continued support and useful critiques: https://www.artstation.com/twinkelmann

All modular pieces as well as most props are my own. Samurai model is from David Vacek: https://www.artstation.com/davidvacek

Tsuri Daiko model is from Patt Martin: https://www.artstation.com/maddhattpatt

Tatami material comes from Kyle Horwood: https://www.artstation.com/kylehorwood

Most other assets come from Quixel, PolyHaven and PBRMAX.

Software used: Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Unreal Engine 5.

Thanks for reading!
