Super Mario's Kombi

What if Mario owned a kombi? It would probably be old with scrathes and soft dents because of the many adventures he had lived, but at the same time in good conditions because of the good care the plumber had of it.

Update - 16 Jan 2021

Here we go! My final update for this contest.

Here’s how Super Mario’s kombi would appear: once a racing car, full of scratches and a few dents, covered by stickers of different sponsors from the Mario Kart series. Decals are also an important part of the design: Mario’s classic emblem, the giant M used in all of his games, is present on both sides and hood. This symbol is on fire, a direct reference to Mario’s most famous power-up, the ability to shoot fireballs.

On the back of the Kombi one can see all the different trophies that the Italian plumber has won during his racing career.

Now the kombi is too old for racing but Mario still keeps it in a good shape and uses it for eventual trips with friends and girlfriend.

Let me know what you think about it!!
Let's-a go!! 🍄

Update - 12 Jan 2021

Here I am with a new update! It's still a work in progress, but I'm almost there!

As you can see, I gave the Kombi an old and lived-in appearance, by adding dirt, scratches and dents to the car body, especially on the bottom part.

I also gave the curtains a cute Mario-themed pattern, to make the inside more comfortable and living. We cannot forget that Mario has a girlfriend, Princess Peach, and she has some influence on the plumber's choices.

I also changed the wheels and gave them the look of the ones used for racing, with the sponsor written on it (Mario Motors). The rims are golden and they have the appearance of the iconic coins that you have to collect in Mario's games.

Finally I also designed the licence plate, which still needs to get an older look.

I still have work to do: now it's time to put a few stickers, especially the ones of the sponsors from when it was a racing car and to refine a couple more things.

Let me know what you think about the work so far and if there's something that doesn't look right to you.
Stay tuned!

Update - 4 Jan 2021

Here is a first sketch of my kombi. I wanted to set a base material for every element of the van, in order to have a better idea of the colors and the materials to start with.

The color scheme is pretty much decided because it tries to represent Mario itself: "blue overalls" for the bottom part, "yellow buttons" (the kombi lights) and a "red hat" for the upper part. The white color is missing, that's why I'll probably include it with the next edits I'm going to make, also to lighten the kombi a little more.

I gave the Volkswagen logo the same look that the Mario logo has, too bad the challenge doesn't allow to edit the mesh because it would be so cool to just turn the W to make it look like the M for Mario!

Next step is to improve and give detail to the materials and start to ruin the kombi a little bit, to make it look a little old and give a lived-in appearance.

Thanks for watching and let me know what you think of my work so far

What if Mario had a kombi?

Hey there! Welcome to my first entry for the texturing contest!

For this challenge I had choosen to imagine how the kombi would be if owned by Mario, the iconic plumber from the Super Mario Bros. videogame series.

I'm going to get inspiration not only from the Mario Kart series, which is all about cars and racing, but also from other Mario's games, in order to better portray his personal life outside videogames.

Stay tuned!
