Handy Eye Project.

This was a small animation test completed in Clip Studio Paint. It was intended as a side project I used to practice animating in my free time.

2D Character Rigging

This first rig was created and animated by myself as part of one of my assignments this past semester. The focus of this task was to become more familiar with the program and to teach myself how to take a 2D character, rig it up and animate with it.

The initial sketch of the character was done in Clip Studio Paint. The linework, colour, rigging, and animation was all done in Toon Boom Harmony.

I completed this second animation for the same assignment as above. This time, I focused on getting more comfortable with the rigging process and to create something with a specific animation goal in mind.

I based the hand movement on a wooden hand mannikin I own and decided to make the character and animation purposely unsettling.

Project 01

This piece is for a semester-long project topic that I am currently working on. The focus is to complete a full animatic for a short animation, as well as to finish one of the shots to a final level.

The story of the animation is about Character A exploring a dark, abandoned room. He hears strange noises and gets scared for a moment, before realising that it's just his friend - Character B - munching on biscuits.

Storyboard and Animatic

This is the animatic I created for this story. It was created and timed out in Storyboard Pro.
It was adapted and revised from my original still boards below, which had been completed prior to me deciding to continue the idea. The originals had a few perspective and timing issues that I was able to address and fix when moving into Storyboard Pro.
The original boards also contained dialogue. I removed this because I did not have access to voice actors or recording equipment and knew it would be easier to have the characters not talk.

Sound effects for the animatic were sourced from Sound Effects Factory.

Clean Animation

As part of this project, I was going to take one shot from the animatic and take it to a final level. I chose to focus on the second shot.
Right now, I have just completed the clean linework and am moving into colour. Here, I have put the final clean pass over the original animatic to show it within the context of the whole piece.

The animatic was completed in Storyboard Pro. The clean animation was done in Toon Boom Harmony.

Keyframe / Vertical Slice

This was constructed as a test to decide how the final product would look. The right wall for painted in Clip Studio Paint, while the character, colour, and lighting were finished in Toon Boom Harmony.

Character Designs and Colour

The two characters featured in the animatic each received three separate colour designs. The first was for their colour palette if viewed in a neutral light, the second for the environment as it was going to be darker than normal, and the final to account for the light produced by the candle flame.

I had these designs sorted out quickly so I could easily reference them when using Toon Boom Harmony.

Project 02

This project was my final piece for a storyboarding workshop at CDW Studios. I plan to continue with this idea and hopefully progress it to a full animated short in the future.

The story of this short animatic is about a supervillain family that exists in an Incredibles (Pixar) cross OKKO Lets Be Heroes (Cartoon Network) setting. The father trying to take photos of his children who have varying degrees of enthusiasm.

Animatic

My main focus for this piece was on the characters, their interactions, and their emotions. I also wanted to establish who and what they were within this setting, given that the full short I have planned will be an introduction to their lives.

Sound effects were sourced from Sound Effects Factory and Sound Effects.

Character Designs

I had a very specific look in mind when designing these characters. The mostly black, white, and grey tones will make them stand out amongst, what I am planning to be, a very colourful world.
I was concerned that they would end up being too dull. So, I assigned each character a brighter accent colour that would add some life to the design. I also used these colours in the storyboard to make the characters immediately identifiable in more complex shots.
