Game Design - Asset Design Entry

by kennedyac on 16 May 2020 for Rookie Awards 2020

My entry for the Game Design category is 3D modeling work I did for VCU. I enter this contest through a recommendation from my teacher, who felt my work was strong enough to submit to the Rookie Awards. I've been studying art and game design for quite some time and this entry I wanted to show a 3D environment design.

3D Modeling Project for Communication Arts Class, Virginia Commonwealth University. The goal was to create a room that centered around a theme to help build the ability to create and maintain a design and tone.

My idea for this was mainly centered around using the Toon shader within the Arnold plug-in for Maya 2018 to create a scene that looked more 2D than it did 3D. The aesthetic I focused on was vaporwave, using pastel warm and cool colors and modeling assets out of the 90s and late 80s.

The biggest hurdle for me personally for this project was using the toon shader. I had never used it prior to the project however I've always loved the style cel-shading, especially the works of Arc System Works and Supergiant Games. It was a great challenge for me that I struggled with till the deadline but I think it was a great learning experience for me personally and I was excited to finally learn a style that I truly liked that wasn't just realism.

If I were to redo this project or add to it, I would definitely both expand on the room itself and really refine the toon shader even more. Some of the projected lines I do think could look a lot better, particularly with the posters and smaller details in general. That and really get more color on the textures and material in general. I tried getting color through each of the textures but I couldn't get it the way I wanted it. In retrospect, I should have used Photoshop to create my own versions of the designs and get the color through that way instead of relying on the shader to do the heavy lifting. Oh, and it still bugs me that the cans are missing tabs and openings, even though it isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

The big reason I even enter this contest was that my teacher had recommended the Rookie Awards to me and that I should submit this project. Although I do feel this is the best 3D work I've probably ever done, I definitely don't think it's high enough caliber compared to the rest of the work featured here but I figured I'd at least try anyway.

The window cloud scene was not done by me, that is a piece done by Star Plasma (https://star-plasma.tumblr.com/post/156710941092/cherry-blossom-sky-20-mins). The same goes for each of the posters, which are 90s gig posters, which I pulled from Google and have no artist credits for those.
