Lucie Lee | Look Development and Set Dressing

by lucielee on 23 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Below are some of the best works I have made during my time at the School of Visual Arts. I am most interested in creating stylized textures in my environments and characters! Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my entries!

Lucie's Atelier

For this project, I have fully designed and constructed my dream shop full of trinkets, cute dresses, and paintings. It was the first time delving into Substance Designer and boy, it was certainly challenging.

I wanted every object to exhibit a high level of detail, with intricate colors, patterns, and signs of wear and tear. Inspired by antique toys, French boutiques, and folk art, I aimed to capture the excitement and vibrancy of an atelier filled with wonder and curiosity.

As for the little shopper in the center, I wanted her to be crafted from wood, much like a painted wooden doll with an emotionless yet cute face.

Forest Girl

I wanted to recreate an artwork made by one of the greatest artists I know, Chris Sickels, with my own original girl character. I modeled this mostly on Maya and Zbrush.

I rendered this in layers: the girl, the animals, the trees and ground, and the background, allowing me to manipulate the lighting for each separately. I then composited them together in Nuke.

I love adding so much personality and detail into my characters!

Fishie Shippie

For this project, I recreated Ken Wong's ship illustration while also adding my own flair. I just absolutely enjoyed texturing the ship, using both procedural and hand painted textures, and just intuitively adding so many fun colors and patterns.

Recently, I've been captivated by the puppet stage aesthetic in my artwork. I've incorporated elements like flat, stylized waves, as well as the moon and stars. As I pieced everything together in the final composition, the result was incredibly rewarding. I was able to capture the magic and the enchantment of the scene!

Fall Town

Based on Kemi Cat's illustration, tackling this town was quite a challenge—there were so many elements to model and texture!

Cowboy Boots

For this project, Challenged myself to create a more realistic piece for the first time, featuring cowboy boots!

It was fun modeling the boots, but, of course, my favorite part was the satisfaction of piecing everything together to create a believable texture.

I textured this on Substance Painter.

Rustic Kitchen

This cozy kitchen illustration by Marfigram took a while to model all of the props and to achieve the worn-down look & a similar light setup. Although there are definitely many areas that need improvements, I am happy with the overall product!
