the work of a second year
This is my work at esma during the 2023/2024 school year
THE HERMINE PROJECT
hello everyone!
In my second year as a 3D animation student I had the opportunity to work on the animal project. We had 60 hours of production time to create a photorealistic animal. I chose to make a white ermine.
The ermine's challenge was not only in the way its coat behaved, but also in its proportions.
This will involve a lot of animal observation and guide placement, but also a lot of failure.
- fur production and texture application in one description
- guide behavior
- meshing and clean modeling
We also had to recreate a setting that would allow the animal to come to life and behave as it should.
At first I wanted to put my stoat in a winter setting with a snow floor. Nevertheless, I realized that white on white didn't really work.
So I decided to replace the image background
Just a little compositing on nuke
THE LADYBUG PROJECT
Before the ermine, we had to make a ladybug. Same instructions as for the ermine, with about the same production time. I really enjoyed working on this project. Painting textures to get a nice SSS was really satisfying.
For the ladybug, observing its textural behavior was one of the most important aspects of my work. Of course, this also required good modeling and a back and wing curve faithful to reality.
After studying and selecting my references, I attacked the work.
- Meshing and clean modeling
- Test displace
- Good Displace
These are my various hand-painted texture maps on Substance Painter
Here again we had to recreate an environment for our insect and create a realistic posing.
To carry out this task, I took a reference that I deconstructed to produce a rendering close to my reference.
This picture is from https://www.trigobert.net/work/repos-coccinella-septempunctata
It was quite difficult to reproduce a lighting similar to this reference but I really liked the composition so I didn't give up and did several tests.
