I'm excited to participate in the Rookie Awards 2024 contest and pleased to present my final year project. Let's start with the full walkthrough of my game.

Behind the scenes, I defined and solidified the direction and the concept of my game. 

I start to firm up the genre of the game and create the storyline and storyboard for the entire game flow, following the concept of Universe 25. I divided the story into 3 chapters for different occasions, so I could visualize the environments and obstacles for each chapter. 

Here, I keep iterating on the game mechanics in Unreal Engine. I also sculpt and modify the assets using Blender, export the models, and import them into Unreal. By adding the light and composing the levels for a better gameplay experience. 

Some of the Iteration Thinking Process

Instead of the hidden cave, I would like to create another game segment to elaborate more on the story context, in which the boss is living underground with tons of cheese. I modified the blueprint as the game flow has changed. In the cave section, I would need to implement the idea of holding the button for 3 seconds, then alerting the boss, and proceeding to Game Over. After the player collects the food, the function will be disabled and returned to normal character movement. To make it more intriguing, I added the boss chasing player after player to steal the food from him.

I also added some Niagara particles system of rock falling while chased by the boss. At last, I added some SFX to my game to make it more immersive.

For this particular level, it took me a while after several user tests, and I missed out on the navigations for the player to understand how the puzzles work. The player will need to control 2 toys and solve the puzzle by stepping on the platform to open the door for another toy to pass through. 1 of the toys has a pull & push mechanism, while the other does not. In order to make the player understand, I added UI map and icons to demonstrate the fucntions.
