I am Kaiya, a texturing and Look development artist from Canada and South Korea. I am currently a junior student majoring in 3D technical animation at Savannah College of Art and Design. 

Today, I'll be sharing my personal project, "By the Seaside"! 

I was responsible for all aspects.  I used Maya for modeling, Zbrush for sculpting, Substance painter for texturing, Arnold for rendering, and Nuke for compositing. Hope you enjoy!

When I was younger, I was completely obsessed with the tropics. The warm weather, fresh coconuts, palm trees, beautiful hibiscus flowers... Everything about tropical regions was my absolute favorite, and just thinking about them made me feel happy. So, when I was brainstorming the initial concept for this project, I thought, "Why not?" I gathered references from real tropical regions and how they're depicted in stylized feature films like Disney's Moana.

Treasure Chest

Since this chest is the main focus of the scene, I wanted it to be highly detailed. I created the base mesh in Maya, sculpted details using Zbrush, and textured in Substance painter. I utilized 5 UDIMs at 4k resolution.

Hermit Crab

This little guy wasn't initially planned, but I felt like the scene needed something extra. Since I've never created a creature or character before, I decided to give it a shot! I used 1 UDIM at 4k resolution and heavily relied on displacement, particularly for its shell. This was also textured in Substance painter.
