3D Lighting Showcase
A showcase of my best lighting projects.
BREAKDOWNS:
Birds (Original Concept art by Sylvain Sarrailh)
I made this environment during my Master degree at Animum. It was modeled and lit in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, rendered using Arnold and composed in Nuke. I also used Quixel Megascans, SpeedTree and TreeIt for the vegetation.
This was my first big lighting project and I managed to learn a lot doing it, from the proper use of light blockers to how to set up all the AOVs in case I needed to tweak anything later in Nuke.

Dark Room (Original Concept art by Sylvain Sarrailh)
I made this project after finishing my studies at Animum Creativity Advanced School. The concept art belongs to Sylvain Sarrailh. The lighting here was pretty challenging and it required a lot of tweaking with the help of some light blockers and some compositing. Eventually, I believe I managed to recreate Sylvain's vision as faithful as possible.
Even Now
This was my first time working with an animated character. I wanted to create a lighting setup that kept the shot interesting while still making sense during the whole animation.
I decided to turn it into a villain reveal shot. I wanted to play with shadows, fog and that unsettling tone of green. Since I also had to model the environment, I made sure to justify all the light sources: Behind him you can see orange fluorescents, some big windows letting the moonlight in and everything is filled with those green thingamajigs.
I learned a lot of valuable lessons such as the importance of setting up a couple of specular lights for the eyes, which make the character feel really alive. A technique used in a lot of Pixar movies.
Character model by Juan Solís. Animated by Lluís Llobera.
The Arcanist (Animation made by Andrés Borja)
Recently I was contacted by a wonderful animator, Andrés Borja , to collaborate in a project. I was in charge of texturing the environment and of all the lighting work, for which he gave me full creative freedom.
After hours of looking for references, I decided to go with a really saturated orange and teal look with some very accentuated rimlights that help build the mystic circus-like feeling I was looking for. I also decided to render the candle lights separately using layers, so I could later compose the flames' flickering in Nuke.
Other projects
I'm currently enrolled in a lighting course at Animum to keep improving my skills. Here are some of my newest projects:
