Hello, my name is Roelien and this is a collection of concept art I did while completing my studies at the Academy of Digital Arts. I hope you enjoy my work!

The Fourth Judge

This is my own IP I created for my final assignment at The Academy of Digital Arts. The Bible is full of lessons and great stories and I enjoy creating concept art based on my faith. This IP is inspired by the story of Deborah from the Bible, hence the title "The Fourth Judge". During this design process I learned a lot about time management and how to work more efficiently, by using photo bashing and building basic 3D models to paint over. I found a new love for costume design as well as getting lost in the world of Blender. This is a collection of some of the characters and assets I designed, as well as an environment.

Story Outline:

Set in Phoenicia, in a world where Mesopotamia never fell, Taliah is chosen by God to be a vessel for His power. She has to retrieve sacred relics stolen from the spiritual realm and now in the possession of the fallen angel Asmodeus and his followers.

The Priesthood

The Cult of Ammon

Cult Hideout

Cherub

This is a four winged angel, guarding the entrance to the garden of Eden. Usually depicted with four heads (human, ox, eagle, lion), she wears cauldrons with the head of an eagle symbolising majesty and the head of a lion symbolising courage. She also has the horns of an ox, symbolising strength.

Censer

A censer, used for burning incense before the Lord. The shape was inspired by a round tulip bud and opens like a fully bloomed tulip. This flower represents new beginnings and the love of Christ. The burning of incense is seen as an image of prayers rising to Heaven and the smoke symbolises faith.

Planning & Process

This was an assignment done for college, where the task was to design an asset and show how it functions. To do this I had to do some research and expand my visual library on how different types of censers work. For the functionality of the censer, I took a lot of inspiration from a FabergĂ© egg. I drew a blue print for myself to make sense of all the moving elements and then imported the orthographic views in blender as a reference to build the 3D model. I wanted the censer to look believable so I added the textures\materials and set up three point lighting in blender to render the different angles. Because I did most of the hard labour in the 3D software, I only did some colour correcting and minimal overpainting in Procreate.

Archangel Sword

A sword for the Archangel Michael, the chief prince and military commander of other angels.

Mage Hideout Cutaway

A hideout for a mage inspired by Tevinter Imperium, hidden in the temples of the old gods.

This was an assignment I did for college, where the task was to create an interior cutaway for an existing IP. This was my very first time creating a cutaway. Even though it's very different from the rest of my portfolio, I included it because I had a lot of fun creating this hideout. It reminded me of playing Sims, creating a floor plan and populating it with a bunch of objects relating to the character and world that it's from.
