Update - 17 Jan 2024

I spend whatever free time I had over the past few days adding in detailing, dirt, scratch marks revealing the metal under material. For further material reference I used Kit from 'Rachet & Clank Rift Apart' as a jump off point. I also  decided to added an emission channel to add some glow to a few areas of Mat. Here's the final renders using the Meet Mat cameras provided and some additional renders!

Here's a final runover of the entire process from base to height displacement, flats to texturing.

I really enjoyed the process of making this final textured character, I've learnt a lot about the new tools available in Substance Painter and how far you can push to create things I didn't think possible in Painter. Glad to be involved in a Rookies contest! I will be on the lookout for the next one to be inspired by.

Update - 12 Jan 2024

Next I began putting in the flat colours and some roughness layers, I figured I wanted to orange to be metal with some scratches and worn parts, and the black/dark grey to be a plastic like material you'd usually get on normal drills. A lot of the flats were made with the help of the pen tool to ensure sharp lines, then just painting in the rest.

Most of the work after that was just going around and dirtying up the metal, hand painting scratches, painting in dirt.

Update - 9 Jan 2024

So I spent some time going through the YouTube videos provided by the competition to learn the new tools, once I had an understanding of how it everything worked I began making my alphas that I will use for the model in Photoshop.

Had a lot of fun and experimentation with getting the alphas to work in the way I wanted, the drill was surprisingly the easiest thing to 'extrude' in this project! The only thing I couldn't manage was the antenna I wanted for the top of the head, but quite please otherwise. The displacement technique is a game changer!

Update - 5 Jan 2024

Hi everyone! This will be my first post on The Rookies, and am quite excited to participate in this challenge. Looking forward to developing my skills even further with Substance Painter.

I felt inspired to create a robot drill character, robot inspiration acquired, colour palette inspiration from real life drills, and finally so material references. I'm still deciding whether I want it to be vinyl figurine material or more metallic robot, but we'll see as things develop!

Here's my final concept, I really want to add and subtract from the model using Substance Painter's new features.
