Update - 5 Jan 2024

Here are my final renders!

I added a name plate on the base, apart from that, I've decided to keep it simple so we can focus on the character!

All aspects were done in Substance Painter. This challenge really made me see the versatility of this program, and I will definitely be using my new skills for future projects. Thanks for following along my progress!

Update - 30 Dec 2023

I liked my previous design but It felt like there was so much potential for more details, so I wanted to see if I could push the design a bit more.

After getting more comfortable with painting heights, I spent the past few days redoing the displacements in Substance Painter, and revamped the design to be more crustacean-y.

Update - 24 Dec 2023

I ended up free handing most of the design rather than following the sketch, since my sketch didn't really consider the head shape of Mat and it was pretty difficult to execute,,,

For the head, I sculpted the details in Nomad Sculpt and baked the normal and height maps in Substance Painter. I wanted to see if i could recreate a similar effect for the body without resorting to sculpting, and it was surprisingly much easier with the path tools and filters. The path tool is such a great tool for a non-destructive workflow, after playing around with the preset shapes and spacing, I managed to make a pretty cool effect around the hip. (This tool is such a godsend lol sorry for gushing about it)

Update - 24 Dec 2023

Here is my initial sketch and mood board! I want to make something that feels sculpted and delicate, something that you might see in a history museum. I've decided to base the design off the giant isopod.
